Why Am I Doing This?

You see back in 2001 I weight over 400 pounds or 186 kilos. That’s me in the picture there.

And at the time, I tried almost everything I could to lose weight – including every diet under the sun. From low-carb, to low-fat, to low calorie and everything in between.

I also spent a small fortune on every conceivable holistic cure and alternative health treatment available. I spent weeks at The Pritikin Institute and I even worked face to face the late Dr. Atkins – yet nothing succeeded in bringing me anything but mediocre results.

The same thing happened every time, I would follow the diet to the letter. I would lose weight quickly in the beginning and then my weight loss would slow down…

until I stopped losing weight altogether!

With each new diet, there’d inevitably come a time when I’d be too discouraged and tired to fight the cravings any longer, and I would binge. And all the weight that had taken months to fall away would come back with a vengeance within a few short weeks!

And I know what it’s like to be hungry all the time too.

As a matter of fact, there was a time in my life when I was hungry day and night and I ate every meal as if I were starving to death. Not only did I eat like I was starving, I craved the most fattening foods possible and it sometimes seemed like the more I ate, the more I starved.

There were days when no matter how much I ate, I was still hungry and no amount of food could satisfy my insatiable appetite.

Most people (including most doctors) cannot imagine what it’s like to be in a body that’s forcing you to gain weight. It’s a living nightmare…

… a nightmare that unfortunately you may be familiar with

It didn’t matter how much weight I gained either. Having enormous excess energy reserves on my body did not abate my hunger in the least. As a matter of fact, the fatter I got, the hungrier I was and the more I ate. For years I just kept gaining and gaining despite trying every diet I could to lose weight. And you cannot imagine how much I struggled (or maybe you can).

One day I decided that I was never going to diet again… and instead I was going to try to figure out why my body wanted to be fat in the first place. Because what’s the point of forcing yourself to try to lose weight if your body’s just going to keep fighting back, night and day? I had to get to the root of the issue. I had to figure out why my body was fighting so hard to hold onto weight. I knew it was more than just me being weak or lazy. I knew there were underlying issues that needed to be deal with.

Drawing upon my experience as a biochemical researcher at The University of Pennsylvania, I went on a quest for real, tangible, practical answers that would impact my life. I spent hours every day learning everything I could about biochemistry, nutrition, neurobiology and psychology. I also studied the field of consciousness research, meditation, hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming, psycho-linguistics, Thought Field Technology, Tai Chi and Chi Kung.

I even studied quantum physics. I became a man on a mission.

I did finally lose my weight.

Over a 2 year period I lost over 220 pounds and that was over 10 years ago and I've been the same weight now for 10 years and I lost the weight without restritive dieting and without extreme exercise and now, 10 years later I still don't diet. I eat exactly what I want, whenever I want.

I first heard of Jon Gabriel a few years ago when he was being interviewed on Coast to Coast AM. He really impressed me with his straightforward approach. He has a gift for making a complicated subject easily understood. And weight loss has definitely become a complicated subjected nowadays. This is a book for someone who is serious about getting results. The idea of visualizing turns off some people, however, Jon Gabriel explains the science behind his techniques and why they work. As a trainer, I've tried many times to convince certain clients that their negative emotions and their stress levels are what's holding them back from reaching their weight loss goals. I just received and read this book, and obviously haven't had time to practice all the visualizations for weight loss; however, I am still giving it 5 stars. Why? Because 20 years ago I had gone to all kinds of doctors to get rid of my migraines. Nothing worked. As a last resort, I went to a visualization seminar (I had seen the ad in a local newspaper to “get rid of your migraines by visualization”). They taught me how to make my brain go into “Alpha” mode and visualize no migraines. The next morning when I woke up, I could not drink my cup of beloved coffee. It suddenly tasted horrible to me! It turns out that coffee was the thing that triggered my migraines. My subconscious mind knew it all along, but my conscious mind didn't. So, if visualization worked for migraines, I feel confident that it will work for weight loss. Who knows, maybe tomorrow I'll wake up and not like chocolate!

Jon's bedtime meditation is a must, it totally relaxes me and I sleep much better because of this particular meditation. Just finished reading it, and while I haven't been practicing the techniques in the book for long, I already feel changes to my habits and mindset. I'm super excited about where I will be in a few weeks, months, years with this visualization practice.

If you have been wanting to lose weight and struggling with unhealthy habits, emotional eating, and lack of energy to exercise, this book can help you overcome those issues.

He references plenty of studies to get you on his side of things. He has plenty of examples to show you why what he's teaching works. And he taught me how I've been using visualization for many things in my life without me actually knowing it. For instance, I heard that peanut butter had rats in it, and I quickly visualized that image. That one visualization had me stop eating peanut butter from a jar for years, and I still make my own peanut butter because I am scared of what is mixed in with the jars. That's how powerful visualization is. I may not totally believe that rats are in every jar, but when I picture it, I am unable to eat it.

The bottom line is that this book sheds more light into the mind-body connection and why dieting is more about hormones than it is about calories in and calories out. This doesn't mean he promotes eating poorly, but he definitely doesn't promote counting calories. He does promote healthy hormones that work for you, and encourages using visualization to help fix the hormonal issues that are making you hold onto fat.

I absolutely love this book! I have his previous one and eagerly pre-ordered the new one as soon as i heard about it. I started reading it the moment it came to my hands. Although the first two chapters are exactly as in the Gabriel Method (the previous book) the rest of the book is different. I like his scientific, yet very understandable approach. I started practicing the evening visualizations while reading the book before bed. I can tell that whenever I miss the audio, my sleep is disrupted. So far I haven't lost any significant weight but I don't think about the food much either. I believe that the change will come whenever it's the time for it.

I have been a follower of Jon Gabriel for awhile, but I really believe this book is the answer for me. I have a problem staying focused without the guided meditation, so although I have always thought it would really help me, I didn't continue with it. I have always known my issues with compulsive overeating were not because I didn't know about healthy food and exercise. Most of us with weight problems have read volumes on the subject, but could never stick with it. I have always known it is an “inside job”. His visualizations in the book really speak to me. I am also doing his 21 day mediation right now, but I wish he had a CD or MP3 of all the visualizations in the book.

This is the first book I have read by Jon. I found so much of it that resonated with me. I had gotten away from the practice of daily meditation. I have been fighting what feels like a losing battle with my body and releasing my excess weight. I have tried everything under the sun. After only 4 days of doing the visualizations in the book I feel a change. I am exited to see what the continued use of the visualizations brings to my life. Thank you Jon for sharing the way to reprogram my mind and thought process.

I say that because I believe obesity is a disease and if this disease has been created by our brain then possibly all other diseases have been formed in us similarly and the big question is can we cure those diseases the same way that we eradicate the disease of Obesity with his system.

Finally someone has explained to me how one comes to be over-weight and why it is so hard to lose weight. My love of biology went into overdrive whilst reading about leptin resistance. The Ocean of Light meditation for getting into Smart Mode is truly powerful. If you are not familiar with meditation, you may need to focus that little bit more. The same is true if you think more negative than postive thoughts. I woke up the following day feeling refreshed, stronger and happier. I feel my natural healthy resilience is back! I feel much better about my body, and there is a desire to eat healthily now, and avoid unhealthy snacks. Using extra weight as a buffer zone of protection is discussed in such depth, I felt my armour shield of protection finally relax, losen and release.
