I Yo-Yo Dieted for Nearly a Decade…

When I moved to New York City in my early 30′s, I started gaining weight slowly. Looking back, I can see that the stress of my Wall Street job, my abusive business partner, and the financial challenges of trying to make it in New York were the big triggers for my weight gain…

… but my attempts to fix the problem with diets actually made it worse since, like most people, I wasn’t addressing the real causes. Stress caused me to gain, and then chronic dieting exacerbated the problem. It made it nearly impossible for me to lose weight, and eventually led me to obesity.

With each diet, I’d lose 10 lbs, then put back on 13 or 14 lbs more.

I didn’t know this then, but today, after 8 years biomedical research and over 10 years working with private coaching clients, I now know that dieting actually makes you fat.

Here’s how the vicious dieting cycle works…

Dieting tricks your body into thinking you’re in a famine state. Your biochemistry and hormones then become altered and you go into fat storage mode, just like an animal preparing to hibernate for the winter.

FAT stands for “famine” and “temperature”, and when your FAT programs are on, you crave food uncontrollably, well past your daily intake needs. Worse still, the more you diet, the more efficient your body becomes at storing fat, and the more difficult it becomes to lose the weight.

It’s the ultimate catch-22. Dieting, by definition, actually makes you fatter; and everyone who has tried and failed to lose weight knows this from first-hand experience.

Even the “Gurus” Couldn’t Help Me…

First, I tried a low fat, whole grain approach at the famous Pritikin Institute in California. That cost me nearly $5,000, and even though I did lose some weight at first, as always, the weight came right back on once I left the center.

So I then tried the Atkins “low carb” diet.

The “low carb” approach was all the rage at the time, so I was convinced this would work. But just to be sure that I did it right, I paid Dr. Atkins himself thousands of dollars to work with me personally.

He was the leading authority of the time, and I was 100% committed. I believed this was the solution, so I dove in headfirst.

There I was, weighing over 400lbs, and suddenly I’m now hyper-vigilant about removing the buns from my burgers, rejecting anything with carbs, and eating eggs and chicken non-stop for what seemed like an eternity.

Looking back, it’s laughable to think that simply eating “low carb” was going to solve my problem, but I’m sure you know the feeling when you’ll literally try anything to lose the weight.

When I told Dr. Atkins that his approach wasn’t working, he said: “What are you doing, jon? You’re killing yourself!”

Dr. Atkins has sold over 15 million books on weight loss, and the best he could do was yell at me. That was all the proof I needed to realize that most people teaching weight loss have no idea what goes on inside your body, inside your brain—and they clearly have no idea how to help people like you and me.

But What About Exercise?

After failing with diets, one doctor convinced me I should focus more on exercise. So I started going to the gym every day. I’d spend a full hour on a stationary bike, peddling my brains out, but all that exercise just seemed to make me hungrier.

The machine told me I’d burned 800 calories, but as soon as I got home, I felt like I could eat an entire pizza—about 3,600 calories—so what was the point?

Now I understand what I was doing wrong…

Recent research reveals that those long, slow exercise sessions I did were counter-productive, leaving me worn out, exhausted, and hungry. But at the time, I figured I just needed to go longer or harder. I’m sure you’ve experienced this yourself at some point.

I’ve since learned that exercise done right is playful, brief, and so simple… but done wrong, it can be a complete waste of time and extremely demoralizing when all that effort produces little or no results.

It’s Not Your Fault…

I can’t tell you how many friends and colleagues accused me of being weak, lazy or undisciplined; and even if they didn’t say it out loud, I could see it in their eyes.

In reality, nothing could be further from truth. I was disciplined and committed to finding a solution, but nothing was working.

The Ultimate Coaching Experience begins with your health history application.

This will take you just a few minutes to fill out, and it’ll provide me and my team with a very clear picture of what triggers might be causing your weight gain. It’ll also help us understand what you’ve been through in the past.

“A New Lease on Life”

I was always reasonably overweight—always a heavy-set person—even as a young girl. I was about 210 pounds. I’m a heavy- framed girl, so I never looked fat. It was after I retired that I really ballooned out. I fluctuated up and down. I tried things, but nothing ever worked..

At one point, I was working out every single night for about six months and only lost about fifteen pounds. Then if I stopped, I put everything back on in a matter of weeks. Then there was the normal fatigue that you get when you’re carrying a lot of weight. You lose interest in everything because you don’t want to do anything. I basically vegetated for years.

Then I saw Jon on TV and something clicked. It was like “This is your answer.” I phoned up, but the book wasn’t ready yet. Periodically, I’d keep calling because I was still trying to lose weight. Then in early 2007, Jon sent me the book and the CD. I still play the CD every night. I won’t go to bed without playing the CD. It was like a miracle. After reading the book and listening to the CD, I just felt “this is right,” and I started losing weight. At first, I didn’t think too much about it, but then I started getting into shape. My daughter was the first person to notice it: I didn’t have a belly that hung over my knees anymore.

I don’t feel the need to eat carbohydrates, breads, cakes, and cookies. To be honest with you, I just lost interest. The CD is brilliant. I’ve been really intuitive most of my life. I really think that when you’re meant to see something, you see it, and that’s why I kept pursuing the book—because I knew it was right for me. I felt that it would work, and it did work. I lost 113 pounds in about six months. I never really kept track of what I was losing or when I was losing it, and I didn’t weigh myself or measure myself. I have kept it off now for about eight months so far, and I’m not putting it on again. I won’t stop listening to the CD. I won’t stop doing my visualization every single night. The CD is my mantra.

Also, at the start, my blood sugar levels would fluctuate between sixteen and seventeen and go as high as twenty, but when I started the Gabriel Method it was about seventeen. In the last twelve months it’s gone down to seven and five. I’m within the normal range. They say I still have diabetes, but I don’t think I do. I don’t need to worry about it.

I’m planning to learn Italian. I’d always wanted to, but when I put all the weight on I didn’t want to do anything. Now I want to be part of the world again. I didn’t have a social life for a long time. I didn’t want to do anything or see anyone. But now! I went downhill for a long time but, because I crashed pretty quickly, I think I picked up pretty quickly. Maybe that’s just the way I’m built. Now I’m able to structure my thinking in a more positive way.

“A Retired Angel Transforms”

I was doing a lot of sports, including being a competitive foot-baller, all through my life. I joined the navy at 203 pounds when I was eighteen.

I stopped doing sports when I was thirty-three and weighed 224 pounds. And I probably drank too much after every game, which was another way to put on all those calories plus more. I just got heavier at a rate of about 5 to 7 pounds a year over twenty years or so. It wasn’t a ballooning, it was just the coat was getting tighter as I was getting slacker. By the time I was forty-three, I was 238 pounds; by age fifty-three, I was 252 pounds.

Then there was the stress. As an accountant for some of the world’s biggest companies, I had to comply with a lot of deadlines. And to keep working, I had to keep eating or drinking so that, by the morning, the work was all done. But some of my eating went into the early morning, which may have been a drink on one side and a snack on the other.

I’d wanted to retire in 2000, but I had to cope with the dot com crash. I had to start work again as a real estate agent. I hardly got a retirement. There was all that stress.

So I attended Jon’s seminar in Perth. After reading his book, I stopped drinking alcohol. He taught me that there’s a thin body inside the fat body, trying to get out. Those two words “Think Thin” were the most important in the whole book. It’s more than diets; it’s more than the walking I do. It’s the holistic side of things—getting the mind right.

I see the CD as the most essential thing. My life just changed around, and I also got a copy of The Secret. And now I’m just everybody’s friend. I’m traveling. My life has just changed so much.
