But first, let me tell you about my story. I used to weigh over 409 pounds. The pictures you see of me are actual, real, untouched photos of my transformation.
Back in 2001, I was pre-diabetic, I had life-threatening sleep apnea and my weight had become the problem in basically every situation in my life. I was a soon-to-be father, and my wife was scared that I wouldn’t be around to see our daughter grow up.
At my job, I didn’t have the energy or the confidence that I used to have. My business was suffering each and every day. My life was so stressful, and just getting through the day was just an enormous effort, carrying around all that excess weight. It felt like I was on a treadmill that was just going too fast, with no way to get off. And my friends used to tease me as I was gaining weight. They stopped teasing me once I was over 400 pounds. Nobody was laughing anymore.
And whenever I went out, I felt like people were judging me.
Wherever I went, I’d just get these dirty looks from everybody, and if I went to a restaurant people would look at me like, “Are you really going to eat that? Why are you eating so much? Why don’t you just go on a diet?”
They had no idea what was going on inside my body. They didn’t know what I know now, that stress and anxiety and many other factors were causing chemical imbalances, hormonal imbalances in my body, that were forcing me to gain weight, making me insatiably hungry, slowing my metabolism and even preventing my body from burning fat. It was a living nightmare for me.
In my case, I tried everything.
I went to the Pritikin Institute, which is the low-fat diet, and I spent $10,000 at the Pritikin Institute over a two-week period. I lost a little bit of weight, but I was on this diet of non-fat milk and wheat bix, eating zero fat. And as soon as I got home, I gained all that weight back in a matter of days.
And then I went on the Atkins Diet, which is the exact opposite. It’s a high-fat, low-carb diet, and I actually worked face-to-face with Dr. Atkins himself and I spent thousands and thousands of dollars with him. I used to meet with him every Monday morning, and in the end he yelled at me for being so fat.
He said, “What are you doing? You’re killing yourself.”
And I thought to myself, “Is that really the best you can do? You’re Dr. Atkins and you’ve sold over 15 million copies of your book and the best you can do is yell at me for being so fat? Like I’m going to lose weight because you’re mad at me? I don’t have enough motivation?”
Dr. Atkins wasn’t the last stop for me.
I met with doctors, naturopaths or any specialist I could find. I once had an acupuncturist tape seeds to my ear. Apparently there’s an acupressure point right here, where if you have seeds taped to them and you press those seeds, it activates a point that makes you less hungry. So here I am, this big buy walking around the streets of New York with these seeds taped to my ear, and every time I smelled pizza I’m going like this and people are giving me strange looks. These are the things I did to lose weight.
And it would all work in the short term, for a little while, but then it was always the same result. I’d have this big binge, I’d gain the weight back again. Naturally thin people have no idea what it’s like. They can’t imagine that you can try as hard as I did to lose weight and no matter what you do your body keeps gaining and gaining. But the reality is, you can’t control your cravings, no matter how hard you try.
Sooner or later, your cravings will get you, because you can fight your body but your body can fight back 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as it did with me. I had cravings all the time, and sooner or later you have to relent.
And I had a very solid biochemistry background from the University of Pennsylvania, and that gave me enough of a foundation to go on the internet and do research, and I spent hours and hours a day studying everything I could about the chemicals and the hormones and the enzymes involved in making fat.
I also found something really amazing, and that is that there is a FAT Switch in our body. It’s part of our human biology that causes you to gain weight, and sometimes stress and processed foods and toxins and many other things can activate this fat switch. And what it does basically, when this fat switch gets activated, it’s as if your body conspires to force you to gain weight. It’s like you’re trying to drive with the emergency brake on.
It just gets harder and harder to lose weight. This is what I lived through, and this is what millions of people are struggling with, day in and day out.
But what I’ve learned through my own experience and through extensive biochemical research and with working with people all over the world, is that when you address these real issues, basically you can turn off this FAT Switch.
You can get your body to naturally want to eat less.
And in a sense, you can get your body to naturally want to be thin, and if you can get your body to naturally want to be thin, you will lose weight automatically and sustainably. Of course, that’s what I know now, after a decade of research and working with thousands of clients. But back then, all I knew is that my body wanted to hold onto weight and was fighting me tooth and nail. And for me, it was like I was at war with my body.
Maybe it’s different for you.
